Why does our honey not carry an organic label?

Local, authentic honey produced with care: we believe in explaining our approach openly.

Bees forage freely

Our bees do not recognise property lines or administrative borders. In the relatively small canton of Geneva, with its homes, gardens, forests, meadows and farmland, they choose which flowers to visit. We cannot guarantee that every flower they forage on grows on certified organic land.

What does the 3-kilometre radius mean?

Swiss organic beekeeping rules assess nectar and pollen sources within a 3 km radius of the hives. This is not the maximum flight distance: bees can travel farther, especially when forage is scarce. Certification criteria also take into account wild vegetation, forests and certain farmland managed according to Swiss ecological performance requirements (PER). Not every field needs to be certified organic.

Why we do not claim organic certification

Within the bees’ foraging area, we cannot control the practices of every garden, green space or farm owner. We have not undertaken organic certification and therefore do not describe our honey as “organic”. The absence of a label does not mean the honey is of lower quality; it simply means that it has not been officially certified.

Our choice: honey made naturally by bees

Our priority is to respect the bees’ work and offer authentic honey. Bees make honey from nectar and honeydew: we add no sugar, flavourings or colourings. We favour careful harvesting and minimal handling to preserve its natural characteristics. We look after colony health and follow Swiss requirements, including for varroa treatments performed outside honey-harvesting periods in accordance with product instructions.

Natural is not the same as certified organic

Here, “natural” describes the honey and our approach, not a certification mark. The term “organic” is reserved for products meeting the applicable rules and certified by an approved body. We prefer to make that distinction clear rather than promise something we cannot guarantee.
